Temporary Roles let you give a member a role for a set amount of time. You choose the role and the duration with /temp-role give; when time is up, the bot removes the role on its own and lets the member know by DM.

In the window above, Alex gives Mia the "Event Winner" role for 7 days, then five minutes later gives the same role again for 30 days to extend it. On the right is the message that lands in the member's DMs when the time runs out.

Temporary roles step by step

What is it for?

VIP membership

Give supporters or reward winners a VIP role for 30d; you don't have to keep track of it by hand when it ends.

Event role

Give a tournament or contest winner a special role for a week (7d).

Temporary restriction

Give a role that closes certain channels for a short time like 12h; when time is up, the member goes back to normal.

Commands

/temp-role give

Member, role and duration are required. You can add a sebep of up to 200 characters; it appears in the audit log and the dashboard list.

/temp-role remove

Removes the temporary role right away, before it expires. In this case the member doesn't get a DM.

/temp-role list

Shows active temporary roles (up to 20 lines; for more it says "…and N more").

By default, the commands are visible to members with Manage Roles. All replies are only visible to the person who used the command.

How do I write the duration?

You typeMeaning
30m30 minutes
12h12 hours
7d7 days
2w2 weeks
1d 12h1 day 12 hours
tomorrow 09:00Until 09:00 tomorrow morning (Turkey time)

Duration limits

The shortest duration is 1 minute and the longest is 1 year. On an English server, s means seconds; for hours, write h (e.g. 12h).

Extending the duration

If you give an active temporary role to the same member again, no new record is created; the duration is updated. The new end time is the duration you give, counted from the moment you run the command; it isn't added to the remaining time.

For admins

The system is free and on by default; no setup is needed. You can also see active temporary roles in the dashboard:

Step 1

In the dashboard, pick your server on the My Servers page.

Step 2

Open the Timed Roles card.

Step 3

In the Active timed roles list you see the role, member, end time and reason. With Remove now you can end a role early; the bot removes it within about 30 seconds and sends the member a DM.

Role order

The bot's highest role must be above the role you give. Your own highest role must also be above that role (except for the server owner). Otherwise /temp-role give gives an error.

If the role can't be removed later

If the bot can't remove the role when time is up (for example, if the bot's role was moved down later), the record is closed and the member keeps the role. If you changed the role order, check the active temporary roles.

Frequently asked questions

What if the member already has the role?

If the member holds the role permanently, outside of a temporary grant, the bot won't give it temporarily. That way it doesn't accidentally remove the permanent role when time is up. If you want to give it temporarily, remove the role by hand first.

Which roles can't I give?

Temporary roles can't be given for @everyone, roles that belong to integrations (e.g. bot roles), or to bots.

What if time runs out while the bot is offline?

The role is removed at the first check once the bot is back. The bot checks durations every 30 seconds.

If I turn the system off, what happens to roles already given?

While it's off, /temp-role give can't be used. Temporary roles given earlier are still removed when their time runs out.

What if the member leaves the server?

The record closes when time runs out; since there's no role left to remove, no DM is sent.

I get "I couldn't understand the duration"

Write the duration in one of the formats from the table (12h, 7d, 2w). It can be at least 1 minute and at most 1 year.

Try it on your server

Give a member a short temporary role with /temp-role give and see what happens when time is up. You can track active roles in the dashboard.
