Automod scans messages on your server according to the rules you turn on. It deletes a message that breaks a rule and, if you like, also applies a warning, a timeout, a kick or a ban. /penalty, the right-click Issue Penalty menu and /purge for staff are also part of this system.

In the window above, Kai writes a message that has no swear words but belittles someone. A word list would miss it; the AI Moderator catches the intent, deletes the message and gives Kai a 10-minute timeout. The bars next to it show how many messages each rule caught in a week.

Protections

Each protection is turned on separately, and all are off by default. For protections with a channel list, you can choose Exempt Channels; posting is allowed in those channels.

How does the profanity list match?

Words of 3 or more letters are matched as whole words: if you add bad, "badge" is not caught. Entries of 1–2 letters are caught anywhere they appear in the text. Upper and lower case don't matter.

How are penalties applied?

  • For each protection you choose one of five actions: Delete, Warn - Delete Message, Timeout - Delete Message, Kick - Delete Message, Ban - Delete Message. The message is deleted in every case.
  • If a message breaks more than one rule, the heaviest action is applied.
  • The timeout length is the duration you set multiplied by the member's automod violation count. With a 5-minute rule, the 3rd violation is 15 minutes. It never exceeds Discord's 28-day limit.
  • A kick is not applied before the member's 3rd violation, and a ban not before the 5th. Until then, a 5-minute timeout is given instead of a kick and a 10-minute timeout instead of a ban.
  • Automod has no fines; nobody's balance is deducted.

Warning threshold

If the Warning Threshold is on, the member's warnings from the last 30 days are counted after a "Warn - Delete Message" penalty. With the default thresholds, 3 warnings mean a 60-minute timeout, 5 warnings a kick and 7 warnings a ban. Warnings given by staff through the Issue Penalty menu also count.

"Penalty permission" means the Discord Timeout Members permission, or a role in the Penalty Command Staff Roles list on the dashboard. A staff member can't penalize someone whose role is higher than or equal to their own.

Messages older than 14 days

Due to a Discord rule, /purge can't delete messages older than 14 days; they are skipped.

Setup

Step 1

On the dashboard, pick your server on the My Servers page and open the Auto-Moderation System card.

Step 2

Choose a Log Channel. Action reports and revoke buttons come here; if you leave it empty, no detailed reports are sent.

Step 3

Fill in the Exempt Roles, Penalty Cancel Staff Roles and Penalty Command Staff Roles fields.

Step 4

In the Protections section, tick the ones you want. For the Profanity Filter, type the word, choose the Action and Duration (min), and click Add.

Step 5

Click Save.

Who is already exempt?

People with the Administrator or Manage Messages permission are not caught by automod rules. Anti-Raid also never kicks the server owner, bot accounts, people with the Manage Server permission, exempt roles, or anyone whose role is above the bot's.

The bot's role must be higher

The bot can't time out, kick or ban someone whose role is higher than or equal to its own. Move the bot's role above the members it will penalize in the role list.

AI Moderator (Pro)

A word list only knows the words you write. The AI Moderator evaluates insults, mockery or threats without swear words using the context of the conversation. It is turned on with the AI Toxicity Filter box inside the Profanity Filter card in the automod settings; if your plan isn't enough, the box stays locked and says why.

  • It only looks at messages that broke no rule. If a rule already caught the message, the AI doesn't run.
  • Advanced Settings has nine categories: Profanity & Slang, Insults, Humiliation, Harassment & Provocation, Hate Speech, Threats & Violence, Sexual Toxicity, Passive-Aggressive, Mild Toxicity.
  • Each category is turned on and off separately; the Detection Threshold (0.30 very sensitive – 0.95 very lenient), the action and the timeout duration are set separately.
  • Between members who talk often and in a friendly way, the threshold relaxes a little. Threats, hate speech and sexual toxicity are exempt from this relaxation.
Measurement & Testing: shadow mode, decision log, appeals

While Shadow mode is on, decisions are calculated and recorded but nobody is penalized; use it to try new thresholds on real conversations. The Decision log stores the first 512 characters, the score and the decision of every message reviewed. The Retention period is 30 days by default (0 = forever, up to 365). You can download the records with Export Decisions (JSONL).

While the decision log is on, a penalized member can appeal with the Appeal button on the channel notice. Appeals land in the Appeal Queue and stay open for 7 days; a member can have at most 3 open appeals at once. If you accept, the bot tries to revert the penalty and tells the member the outcome by direct message.

Critical Safety runs separately

Critical Safety, which catches scam links, sharing of personal information, threats and self-harm signals, is free on every plan, on by default, and works even while automod is off. You set its alert channels with /critical-safety channel (requires the Administrator permission).

Frequently asked questions

Is there a built-in profanity list?

No. The Profanity Filter only works with the words you add. To catch insults that aren't on the list, you need the AI Moderator.

Why did the member get a timeout even though I chose kick?

A kick is only applied from the member's 3rd automod violation, and a ban from the 5th. Before that, a short timeout is given instead; the Action line of the report shows what was actually applied.

How do I undo a wrong penalty?

Click Revoke Penalty on the card in the log channel. The warning is deleted and timeouts and bans are lifted. A kicked member can't be brought back; you need to invite them again.

Do staff get caught by the filter too?

People with the Administrator or Manage Messages permission don't. To exempt other roles, add them to the Exempt Roles list.

What does Anti-Raid do?

If the set number of people join within the set time, it kicks or bans the new members from that wave and posts a critical entry in the log. If you like, the Channel Lock system can lock the server at the same time.

Automod doesn't catch anything

Check that the protection's box is ticked and whether the member has an exempt role or the Manage Messages permission. For the Profanity Filter, the word needs to be on the list.

The penalty isn't applied

The bot's role must be higher than the penalized member's role, and the bot needs the Timeout Members, Kick Members and Ban Members permissions.

Set up automod

First choose a log channel, then turn on a few protections and send a test message.
