The Reaction Role system sets up panels where members choose their own roles. Each role on a panel is tied to an emoji; when a member clicks the button or reacts with the emoji they get the role, and when they take it back the role is removed.

The window shows a button panel with Gaming, Music and Announcements roles. Alex clicks Music and gets the role; clicking Announcements, which he already has, removes that role. Both confirmations are only visible to Alex.

Two panel types

Multi-select

Members can take as many of the panel's roles as they want. This is the default mode.

Single-select

Members hold only one of the panel's roles. Picking a new role removes their other roles from the same panel; on an emoji panel their old reactions are removed too.

Which type should you choose?

Button panels are easier to use on mobile and tell the member what happened. Emoji panels look cleaner, but members only see their reaction being added and get no confirmation message.

Setup

Reaction Roles has no commands; panels are built in the web dashboard and sent to a channel.

Step 1

In the dashboard, pick your server on the My Servers page.

Step 2

Open the Reaction Role System card and click + Create New Panel.

Step 3

Choose the title, channel, color, mode and interaction type; add a description if you like.

Step 4

With + Add Mapping, pick one emoji and one role on each row. On a button panel you can also add button text.

Step 5

Save the panel, then click Send to Channel.

A server can have up to 10 panels. Besides the standard emojis, the emoji picker also includes the server's own emojis.

Role order matters

The bot needs the "Manage Roles" permission, and the bot's role must be above the roles on the panel. On a button panel, if this is missing the member sees a warning saying what is wrong. Roles that belong to an integration or a bot can't be assigned manually.

Update Message clears reactions

If you edit a panel that was already sent and click Update Message, all reactions on the message are removed and the bot adds its emojis again. On an emoji panel, members' old reactions are lost too.

Roles with admin permissions

Unless you are the server owner or an administrator, you can't add roles with dangerous permissions such as Administrator or Manage Roles to a panel. This keeps role panels from being used to hand out permissions.

Frequently asked questions

How many roles can a member have at once?

In multi-select mode they can take every role on the panel. In single-select mode they hold only one role from the same panel.

How do I drop a role?

On a button panel, click the same button again. On an emoji panel, remove your reaction from the emoji.

If I delete a panel, are the roles taken away from members?

No. Deleting a panel also deletes the panel message in the channel and stops new role assignments; roles members already got stay as they are.

What happens if I pause the system?

While it's paused, members who click a button see a warning, and reactions on an emoji panel don't change roles. When you turn the system back on, the panel works from where it left off.

I react with the emoji but don't get the role

Check that the bot's role is above the role being given and that "Manage Roles" is enabled. If the role was deleted, edit the panel, pick the new role and click Update Message.
